Create With The London Loom & Obby

 In Create

On a crisp autumn evening I headed east to Hackney Down Studios and The London Loom. Nestled down a side street the studios hold host to a fantastic community of creatives from artisan start ups to established web design businesses.

The London Loom (Francesca Kletz & Brooke Dennis) moved into their studio space earlier this year, and have already created an awesome creative hub filled with quality equipment and LOTS of colourful yarn!

I discovered The London Loom, and the tapestry workshop we were about the embark on, through Obby, a community market place where you can discover and book a whole host of amazing experiences right across London. They work closely with the the workshop hosts so you can be confident that when you book through them you are going to get a great learning experience.

Plus with flexible cancellation, secure payment and lowest price guarantee, you are just a click away from discovering a whole new skill and maybe even your new passion!

They list a massive range of experiences from wine tasting to calligraphy and welding to butchery skills – ooh and you get £10 off your first class when you register here!

So, in Francesca and Brooke’s cosy studio, they talked us through setting up our looms with the warp thread and starting off the tranverse weft thread to create a base for our tapestries.

Like a kid in a sweet shop I obviously (!) wanted to incorporate as many of their beautiful pink yarns as possible so went for coral sparkly tassels next before building in some more structure with tie dye yarn, and of course adding in some pom pom yarn tassels too!

As well as plain weave and tassels, Brooke talked us through adding soumak weave with candy floss textured roving to add plaited pattern to our works.

Over two hours we built up a significant chunk of our wall hangings while Francesca and Brooke talked us through different techniques and skills to add variety to our work. They were great hosts and created a relaxed and warm environment surrounded by a whole rainbow of gorgeous yarns!

If you fancy trying your hand at a new skill check out the workshops on Obby, and if tapestry tickles your fancy, check out The London Loom.

I’d love to see your creations, share them on social media and tag @ARosieLifeStore so I can have a snoop!

Happy crafting!

Love, Rosie xxx
